Air America was an American passenger and cargo airline established in 1946 and covertly owned and operated by the Central Intelligence Agency’s (CIA) Special Activities Division from 1950 to 1976. It supplied and supported covert operations in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. It was widely alleged among various veterans that the Central Intelligence Agency was involved in smuggling opium produced in Western Vietnam and Eastern Cambodia to heroin producers in the United States at considerable profit. In the book The Politics of Heroin in Southeast Asia, Alfred W. McCoy, a professor at the University of WisconsinMadison, provides evidence of the use of opium by agents of the US Government to fund covert operations in Vietnam.
