Best laptop for a philosophy major?

I will be leaving for college in August and I need a laptop. I would be light and as cheap as possible, but still good for word processing internet, and perhaps a game of light or both (anti-stress:)) Any ideas?

  1. Toshiba last longer than others and is very reasonable

  2. If you add games into the mix, even light games now-a-days require a good graphics board or one with its own memory. Also, nothing is lighter than a netbook since it doesn’t have a CD/DVD drive. If you don’t need one then opt for a netbook since they are the lightest of all computers. If you do, you can also opt for an external CD/DVD drive which you can plug in when needed only.

Netbooks can do internet surfing, word processing and modest video like watching an online streaming show and/or locally installed, light, non-high-graphics intensive games; it will not run STEAM games at all.

You can opt for a cheaper laptop and opt to get the older single core processor or the Celeron versions. Unfortunately, these type of laptops lack the muscle power to crunch heavy stuff such as games. There are also laptop brands with removeable CD/DVD drives in case you need to use the slot for an extra battery.

Light weight laptops have to compromise something. Either processor, screen size, hard drive vs flash drives, physical size, features such as built-in webcams, etc. If you want all the features but light, then you may have to pay a higher price.

Buying a laptop is like buying a new pair of shoes. It needs to fit you, your needs, your style and your budget. You should go to you favorite computer store such as Best Buy or Walmart or Target and play around with the floor models. If you find 2 or 3 that you like, don’t buy it impulsively. Go home and do more research and see if you can find it online for cheaper. If not, there is always that store.

Good luck and I hope this helps.
