  1. There are a number of types of fitness. Aerobic conditioning is refers to the ability of the heart/lung to provide Oxygen and distribute it to the areas of the body that needs them the most. Any slow, but steady activity that increases the heart and respiratory rate to 60 – 80% of the max heart rate will impove aerobic (and therefore heart) conditioning. So circuit training with weights , walking, jogging, swimming, and even doing household chores can be an aerobic activity. Lifting heavy weights, where the needs of a muscle can temporarily exceed the ability of the blood supply to provide Oxygen, is an anaerobic activity. And finally, there is stamina, which is the ability to engage in an anaerobic activity, recover rapidly, and then do it again. That is exemplified by doing wind sprints. To improve aerobic conditioning, in your question, the answer would be the circuit training or aerobic walking. But you can further improve your overall level of fitness, once you have good aerobic fitness, by doing the wind sprints. I have provided a link that helps to explain the MANY different types of fitness.

  2. Plain aerobic walking is the best for the heart. Sprinting may not be ideal and weight lifting is not recommended at all. Weight lifting (isometric exercise) increases the peripheral resistance.
